Why I founded the Association of Marketing Leadership & Rigor

The founding of the Association of Marketing Leadership & Rigor (AMLR) revolves around its mission; To elevate the field of marketing by advocating for and by providing training and resources to business professionals.

Throughout my career, I’ve had the opportunity to work with 1,000s of marketers and cross-functional team members. I’ve observed a few recurring themes: First, the marketing profession doesn’t have a standardized method to deliver and assess foundational knowledge. Providing a solid foundation will help marketers launch and excel in their careers. Second, shifts between roles both within marketing or into marketing from other functions occur frequently. These folks would have benefitted greatly from a marketing program that facilitates the transition. Last, I’ve had the opportunity to work with amazing cross-functional teammates in R&D, sales, and product management who are interested in what marketers do. They are curious about our thought process, the frameworks we use, and how we approach customer segmentation, insights, and messaging.

One of my passions is to help people succeed. I take great pride in the opportunity to coach and mentor direct reports as well as other colleagues. It’s wonderful to see them grow, perform better, become more efficient, and increasingly confident. I’ve also jumped at any chance to give back to my alma mater by participating in events such as panels and roundtable discussions. In fact, following a recent roundtable discussion at the W.P. Carey School of Business, a student proclaimed that I should write a book. I was excited to let him know that I was actually in the process of doing so.

The combination of the themes and my passion for helping people created a dilemma for me, wondering, how I can assist a broader audience. The answer was to write the Practical Marketing Essentials book and develop the Association of Marketing Leadership & Rigor – Practical Marketing Essentials (AMLR-PME) certification program.

My professional background

I’ve been fortunate to have had a diverse set of experiences in my career. This includes the opportunity to work across multiple industries as well as to gain exposure to several types of marketing roles. Early in my career, I also had the opportunity to work in accounting and finance roles that have continuously paid dividends.

My career development includes experience in industries such as CPG, SAAS, and consumer durables. In those roles, I’ve done marketing and in some situations sales to both business-to-business and business-to-consumer customers. In B2B scenarios, I’ve partnered with major retailers including Walmart, Dollar General, and The Home Depot to name a few. I’ve also had extensive experience in B2C, where I’ve held responsibilities ranging from in-person sales to launching nationwide television campaigns.

The range of my experience includes an array of company sizes and structures. I’ve gained valuable experience working at a Fortune 500 company in Stanley Black & Decker, Inc. as well as other leading companies including GoDaddy Inc. and Henkel AG & Co. KGaA. Equally as valuable was my experience at the National Academy of Sports Medicine, which in comparison is a relatively small company. There, I was in an entrepreneurial environment where you are leading brand strategy discussions, updating the website, and writing marketing email copy on the same day. I drew on all of these experiences as I developed the book and AMLR-PME certification program.

What I hope AMLR will accomplish

Going back to the AMLR mission; To elevate the field of marketing by advocating for and by providing training and resources to business professionals. My goal is to help positively impact the marketing profession from three perspectives:

  1. The customer – Increase the value customers derive from products and services. Marketers will capture better insights, drive improved innovation, and be more effective communicators.
  2. The organization – Help marketers deliver more value to their organization through greater results as well as be more effective business leaders.
  3. The marketing professional – Elevate the marketing profession. As marketers become more effective and become better leaders, their value will increase.
